Logging On With a Smartcard

You can log onto DMDC Web applications with an authorized smartcard such as a CAC (Common Access Card) or PIV (Personal Identity Verification) card.

Note:If you are logging on with certain smartcards for the first time, or if you have been issued a replacement card, you may need to register it by providing your username and password.

  1. Insert your smartcard into your workstation's card reader.
  2. Type or copy your application's URL into your Web browser and press Enter.
  1. On the Standard Mandatory DoD Notice and Consent page, read the notices and click OK.
  2. On the Registered User Logon page, verify that the Smartcard option is selected and click Continue.

Note: If the Smartcard Registration page displays, follow steps a and b below to register your smartcard. Otherwise, continue with Step 5.

  1. On the Smartcard Registration page, type your username and password and click Register. If your registration information does not match the records stored in the database, a message describes the error. Retype your username and password and again click Register.

After three unsuccessful registration attempts, your account will be suspended. Contact the DMDC Support Center (DSC) for assistance.

If registration is successful, a registration confirmation displays.

  1. Click Continue.
  1. Follow your browser’s instructions to select a certificate. If prompted, enter your Personal Identification Number (PIN) associated with your smartcard. For CAC Card logon, you must select your DoD Personal Identify Verification (PIV) Authentication certificate.
  1. In Microsoft Internet Explorer (I.E.) and Edge, when prompted to Select a Certificate, select the certificate with the prefix of Authentication. You may need to click on the More choices link to find the correct certificate.
  2. In Chrome, when prompted, select the certificate that contains the following under the list of intended purpose(s): id-fpki-common-authentication. You will need to view Certificate information for each certificate until you find the correct one.
  3. If you receive an Invalid Certificate error, you must clear your certificate cache by closing and reopening your browser in order to select the correct certificate. When using I.E. and Edge, you can also clear your certificate cache by navigating to Internet options, selecting the Content tab and clicking the Clear SSL state button.
  1. Depending on your authorization, you may see the Site Selection or Role Selection page. If so, complete this step.

Make a selection and click Continue.

When the authentication process is successful, the application's Home page displays and you can begin using it. From this point on, you can use the application's built-in help system to view more information.

For security, the system automatically logs you off after a period of inactivity.
